Abstract
Objectives. The purpose of this research was to examine the prevalence of halitosis in Korean adolescents and determine relative causes.

Methods. The subjects of the study were 74,698 adolescents, they were middle school to high school students who completed the 2007 Korea Youth Risk Behavior survey.

Results. The odds ratios for developing halitosis were low for male students who live in large cities who considered themselves to be healthy, and who brushed their teeth more than 3 times a day. However, the odds ratios for those who considered themselves to be overweight and who had low financial status were significantly lower. The odds ratios were significantly lower for those who had much stress, low grades in their studies, and had dental disease over 3 times for one year. For female students, those who had a low financial status and dental disease over 3 times for one year showed a significantly higher odds ratio of 7.53. Subjects who were drinking and smoking at that time, who had a normal figure, and who brushed their teeth over 3 times a day had a significantly lower odds ratio.

Conclusions. This study has identified the current statusof halitosis in Korean adolescents and the relevant causes. It is suggested that they learn how to brush their teeth properly to prevent halitosis.
